2018 Beyond Criminalization Colloquium

On November 9, 2018, the Initiative to End Family Violence hosted the Beyond Criminalization Colloquium. The Colloquium recognized that law has not solved the problem of domestic violence and encouraged the anti-violence movement to consider community, public health, economic, and human rights perspectives on and possible responses to intimate violence.

The colloquium began with Leigh Goodmark presenting her new book, Decriminalizing Domestic Violence: A Balanced Policy Approach to Intimate Partner Violence. Leading scholars and practitioners from around the nation who focus on community, nursing, public health, economic, and human rights responses to domestic violence offered their reflections. The afternoon featured a participatory strategizing session to reimagine current responses to abuse and consider how the ideas discussed could be implemented in our communities.
